What's New

Reshaping High School English

| ENG 3U | What is ENG 3U All About? | What's New | Our Goals | Safe Learning Environment | Some Final Thoughts...

What's new are the challenges that must be overcome to make this goal attainable.  It's not difficult to teach literature to students, but it is difficult to teach students to find relevance in what they are being taught.

Why?  What challenges do we face?

  • Students are exposed to an increasing diversity of social, cultural, and environmental issues that need to be addressed.
  • The explosion of technology  is consuming young people.   Some estimates place Canadian families online for more than 32 hours per week (Ipsos-Reid 2002).  The result?  Our young people are using--and becoming more familiar and comfortable with--forms of communications other than written texts to seek out information.
  • Students learn in a variety of ways and have unique and individual needs.
  • Students need to be prepared to function effectively in their chosen occupation when they leave the sheltered enviroment of our schools to enter the world of work.
  • Students need to become critical thinkers and enthusiastic lifelong learners.
