Our Goals

Reshaping High School English

| ENG 3U | What is ENG 3U All About? | What's New | Our Goals | Safe Learning Environment | Some Final Thoughts...

To meet new challenges,  ENG 3U will

  • develop a curriculum that will address the diverse social, cultural, and economic needs of students
  • develop a curriculum that will accomodate the variety of learning styles and multiple intelligences of students
  • develop critical thinking skills
  • develop effective communication and leadership skills
  • instil the love of literature and learning in students

How can ENG 3U accomplish this?

  • A greater variety of formative and summative activites will be introduced that will integrate new media and technologies into the study of English literature.   These activities will complement--not compete with--the study of literature and language.
  • Students will be encouraged to bring their own experience to the study of literature to help them find relevance and meaning.
  • Students will engage in group activities which will enable them to share and develop their expertise with their peers.  Bringing their own previous experience to a situation and drawing on the unique or similar experiences of others will enrich their learning  and lead them to new meaning-making.
  • Students will be encouraged to take risks, to look at texts critically as representations of reality, not as reality itself.
  • Students will develop awareness of the influence of their personal webs of relationships on the development of who they are and how they view the world, and extend that knowledge to the understanding of texts and language.
  • Students will develop the ability to communicate their ideas effectively in a safe learning environment.
